Dance and Music

While there are countless ways to celebrate cultural diversity, today we spotlight the captivating world of dance. Dance transcends borders, breaks down barriers, and brings communities together. So, let’s embrace our rich and diverse global dance floor, where the rhythms of humanity intertwine in an enchanting celebration of life.

Rhythm is at the heart of most African music. In São Tomé, the ússua and socopé rhythms dominate much of their traditional-style music. However, the musicians on Príncipe are known for their creation of the dêxa beat. Other African styles, especially from other Portuguese-speaking countries like Angola, are equally as popular in the islands. Kizomba (related to zouk music) is like an Angolan-style pop music that’s often heard here.

Sport

A sporting event is a powerful way to celebrate and promote cultural diversity as well as multiculturalism. Sport also fosters inclusivity, highlighting diverse communities’ unique traditions and talents. Women’s football bridges cultural divides and promotes unity, from international competitions to even just playing for fun.

Football brings together players from many ethnicities, backgrounds, and nationalities. They show teamwork and camaraderie across cultural boundaries. Athletes at MCM College learn to appreciate and respect different views. They do this while working towards a common goal. This fosters a sense of unity and mutual respect, adding a unique flair to the game, and  advocating for equality.

Food

At MCM College, students embrace and celebrate different cultures and backgrounds. The college provides opportunities through workshops and other experiential activities to create awareness with a deep acceptance, understanding and a rich tapestry of experiences based on cultural diversity. One delightful and engaging way to achieve this is through the exploration of international cuisines. Embracing different cultures through food not only satisfies taste buds but also serves as an educational and enriching experience for everyone at MCMC.

Food is an integral part of all cultures. It connects us to our origins like family and country, to our beliefs and experiences, and to our unique cultural customs and traditions. When we celebrate and enjoy culturally diverse foods, this helps to foster connections, inclusion and a sense of belonging, while shaping positive experiences with food for children that influence their long-term food preferences and unique cultural identities.
